パッケージデザインの文化的差異を日米の学生が共に学ぶ

Joint US-Japan study of cultural differences in package design

授業内容
Class content

まず会社訪問（Takram, 資生堂，Zibaデザインの3社）でその会社の理念や最新のデザインについて話を聞き，ディスカッションを行った。次に日本の店舗調査を行った。その後，風呂敷セッション，お土産セッション，エイリアンパッケージセッションの3つのセッションを行い，グループワークでパッケージデザインを2つ考案，紙で試作をして，プレゼンテーションを行った。それぞれの講師は，途中経過でアドバイスをし，最終プレゼンテーションでは講評を行った。
事後学習として「振り返り」のディスカッションをオンラインで実施した。

First, the students visited different companies (Takram, Shiseido, and Ziba Design) and learned about their philosophies and cutting-edge designs, followed by discussions. Next, they conducted a survey of stores in Japan. Thereafter, they held a furoshiki cloth session, a souvenir session, and an alien package session. Working in groups, they proposed two package designs, created paper prototypes, and gave presentations. The instructors gave advice during the process and evaluated the final presentations.
The follow-up assignment was an online discussion of the process.

デザイン会社を訪問しディスカッションをすることで，デザインが如何に文化や社会システムに依存しているかということを理解した後，日米の学生が協働してデザインワークを行い，文化の違いを含めた視野を獲得できた。プレゼンテーションでは単に考え方の提案のみならず，製品の模型を作ることでユーザビリティーも含めた具体的なデザインを提案することができ，デザインを学ぶ学生の特質を活かしたプログラムとすることができた。

Visiting the design companies helped the students grasp just how much design is dependent on cultural and social systems. Thereafter, the American and Japanese students collaborated on design projects and gained perspective on issues regarding cultural differences. The presentations, rather than being mere proposals, called on students to create model products and propose concrete and usable designs. The program made the most of its students' characteristics as designers.
