Class objectives

Students from the University of Cincinnati (UC), a sister school of Chiba University, visited Japan for a short-term overseas study program, enriching their study of Japanese language and culture as well as contributing to the promotion of student interchange and the internationalization of Chiba University. In the process of studying each other's culture, language, and society through active learning, the students met face-to-face, exchanged opinions, and worked together, thereby grasping the status and issues of global society as well as the meaning and significance of Japanese studies from an international perspective.

Class content

For approximately two weeks, from May 13 to May 29, the Chiba University students attended joint classes along with the UC students (as a rule, in English). The classes were undertaken by Professor Junko Markovic of the UC and Chiba University instructors. Moreover, the students participated in interchange activities, including off-campus field trips. Before the arrival of the UC students, the students in the "International Exchange Studies" course created videos, which they uploaded to Moodle and the UC cloud. In addition, they prepared and shared similar materials at various times during the UC students' stay in Japan.
The participating students were divided into small groups, each responsible for a cultural experience or exchange event, and each group prepared in advance. The students in the course participated in the program upon viewing the advance study materials that were provided online.

April-May: Advance study on the UC summer program
Creation of English-language introductions to Japan, Japanese culture, and Chiba University; creation of PowerPoint and video materials; exchange event planning

Middle of May-end of May (approximately 2 weeks): UC summer program

• Lectures given by UC and Chiba University instructors (in English as a rule)
• Off-campus field trips (Edo-Tokyo Museum, Asakusa, etc.)
• Japanese cultural experiences (i.e., making traditional Chiba rice rolls, holding a tea ceremony, and wearing a kimono)
• Exchange events

Beginning of June: Tuesday: 5th period: Wrap-up (reflections on the program, creation of post-exchange materials, and sharing on cloud)

Although the actual summer program lasted approximately two weeks, from mid- to late May, the online study and exchange carried out before and after the program promoted smooth interaction during the face-to-face program and supplemented the short period. In addition, the interchange using materials created by the students was a notable success.

授業目的

千葉大学の協定校であるUCから短期研修の留学生を受け入れ、シンシナティ大学学生の日本語教育・日本文化研修に寄与するとともに、学生同士の交流と千葉大学の国際化を促進することを目的とする。アクティブ・ラーニングによって相手国の文化・言語・社会を学び合う過程において、直接出会い、意見を交わし、行動をともにする中でグローバル化社会の現状と課題、世界から見た日本研究の意味・意義を把握する。

授業内容

5月13日～5月29日の約2週間、シンシナティ大学学生とともに、シンシナティ大学教員・マルコビッチ順子氏、および千葉大学の教員の授業を合同で受講（使用言語は原則として英語）するとともに、学外参観等も含めた交流を行った。シンシナティ大学からの短期留学生到着に先立って、Moodleおよびシンシナティ大学側のクラウドに、「国際交流論」受講生が出演・作成した映像を掲載した。また、短期留学生の来日中にも、不定期に同様の資料を作成・共有した。
参加学生は、全員が文化体験や交流会を担当する数人ずつの係に分かれ、各グループで事前準備に臨んだ。受講生は、オンラインで提供される事前学習資料に目を通した上で、プログラムに参加した。

4月9日（火）5限　：ガイダンス
4～5月：UCサマープログラムに関する事前学習
（英語による日本、日本文化、千葉大についての紹介文作成、PowerPointや映像の作成、交流会運営についてなど）

5月中旬～5月下旬〈約2週間〉：UCサマープログラム

• シンシナティ大、千葉大教員による講義（使用言語は、原則として英語）
• 学外見学（江戸東京博物館、浅草など）
• 日本文化体験（房総太巻き作り、茶道、着付けなど）
• 交流会

6月初旬・火曜5限：総括（プログラムの振り返り、事後交流資料の作成・クラウド上での共有）

実際のサマープログラムは、5月中旬～5月下旬の約2週間と短いものであるが、事前・事後にオンライン上での学習や交流を行うことにより、対面でのプログラムが円滑な実施を促し、期間の短さを補完した。また、学生自身が作成した資料を用いての交流を行ったことも、特筆すべき成果のひとつである。
