Class objectives
The use of collaborative online international learning (COIL) enables classes available only in the United States (US) to be held in Japan and vice versa, thus arousing interest in new concepts of learning, encouraging both American and Japanese students to study abroad, and cultivating human resources who will contribute to diverse fields.
Class content
[Before overseas study]
Introduction Module: Students from Chiba University and the University of Alabama (UA) introduced themselves in writing (English) by posting to Blackboard to stimulate mutual interchange.
Module 1: Exchange of opinions based on English messages. Comparing the health and medical care systems of both countries, the students composed essays in English summarizing their research results, which were posted to Blackboard. This was followed by an exchange of opinions among students from both universities.
Module 2: Creation of English posters. Students selected a paper on the topic of maternal/neonatal nursing and summarized the contents in an English-language poster, which was posted to Blackboard to be shared among students from both universities.
[After overseas study]
Module 3: Students filled out a survey form (in English or Japanese) about their learning, including their experiences of online learning and short-term study abroad on site. The contents covered the following: 1) feedback on the overall program (notable experiences and corresponding reasons), 2) experiences and observations related to cultural and value-based understanding, and 3) discussion of multicultural education in nursing.

The online assignment facilitated information exchange and organization of knowledge regarding the American and Japanese health insurance and medical systems. Via on-site study preceded by advance learning, students resolved initial questions through classes, seminars, and tours of medical facilities at the UA. Furthermore, they perceived the values of patients receiving medical care in an unfamiliar culture and background.
After the students' return, a follow-up assignment was employed to integrate their studies and experiences. Students deepened their learning through evidence, such as statistical data and documents, and enhanced their understanding of the establishment and development of medical care within the history of a given country in relation to its culture and values, such as the differences between the American and Japanese health insurance systems and the status of insured patients and their contexts. The participants were given the chance to consider how the study of nursing can contribute to the elimination of medical and economic disparities to achieve universal coverage. Notably, this aspect was useful to students when envisioning their future careers.

授業目的
COILを利用して、米国でしか学べない授業を日本で、日本でしか学べない授業を米国で実施することで、新たな学びの興味を開眼させ、日米双方の学生の留学を促進し、多様な分野で活躍する人材を育成する。
授業内容
【派遣留学前】
Introduction Module：千葉大学とアラバマ大学の両学生が各自の自己紹介を英文で作成。Blackboard上に投稿し、相互の交流を図った。
Module1：英文メッセージによる意見交換。保健医療システムの比較をテーマとし、調べた内容を英語でまとめてメッセージを制作。Blackboard上に投稿して、両大学の学生間で意見交換を行った。
Module2：英文ポスターの作製。母性/新生児看護に関するテーマについて書かれた論文を1つ選び、英文で1枚のポスターにまとめる。これをBlackboard上に投稿し、両大学の学生間で共有した。
【派遣留学後】
Module3：オンライン学習と短期留学を通した現地での経験を統合し、学びを調査フォームに回答（英語または日本語）。内容は、1）プログラム全体についての感想（強く印象に残ったこと・理由）、2）文化や価値観の理解に関わる体験と説明、3）看護における異文化教育に関する考察である。

オンラインの課題学習は、日米の医療保険制度、医療システムに関する情報の交換と知識の整理に繋がった。事前学習を行った上で現地での研修を実施したことにより、アラバマ大学での授業や演習、医療施設見学を通して事前に感じていた疑問を解決し、新たな課題を発見するなど発展的な学習へと繋がっていた。さらには、自分とは異なる文化の中で医療を受ける人々の持つ価値や、それらの背景に目を向けることができた。
留学後は、学習と経験を統合するために事後課題を提示した。学生は、統計データや文献等を根拠に考察を深め、日米の医療保健制度の相違、保険加入状況と背景など、その国の歴史の中で文化や価値と結びつきながら医療が成り立ち、変遷を遂げてきていることを理解できた。本プログラム参加者は、ユニバーサルヘルスカバレッジを目指して、医療、経済格差の解消のため看護学が貢献できることを考察することができ、将来のキャリアビジョンを考えるうえでも役立ったという感想を述べていた。
