Class objectives
Bidirectional classes were held using social media and other platforms. First, the students held group discussions about the school education systems and geographical education curricula in the US and Japan. They covered several topics, such as the characteristics, strong points, and issues for improvement on both sides. In addition, students gained an increased understanding of the American society, culture, and history as well as the geographical characteristics of Alabama, with special reference to the civil rights movement.
Class content
October 8: Class orientation using videos
October 15: General introduction to the US using videos; group organization and creation/upload of introduction videos for each group
October 29: Lecture on the overall American school education system; creation/upload of response videos to the introduction videos sent from the UA
November 5: Lecture (1): The American social studies education system (in particular, geography education); creation/upload of videos introducing the society and culture of the country; distribution of reading materials on the American and Japanese social studies education curricula
November 12: Lecture (2): The American social studies education system (in particular, geography education); creation/upload of video (1) introducing the Japanese social studies education curriculum and posing questions about the American curriculum
November 19: Reading material on Japanese geography education (Ikeno text); creation/upload of video (2) introducing the Japanese social studies education curriculum and posing questions about the American curriculum
November 26: Reading materials on Japanese geography education (Saye text)
December 12: Essay writing and creation/upload of videos comparing the American and Japanese geography education curricula
December 19-January 28: Lectures and debates (i.e., US regional classifications, geographical characteristics of Alabama, and Alabama through the lens of the civil rights movement)
February 10-18: Overseas study in Alabama

Students from both universities were first divided into groups and then into pairs for video exchanges. Points noted for improvement included difficulty understanding American students' spoken English, considerable time required for video creation, sense of time lag due to the once-a-week pace, and so on. However, the students also stated that the extensive translation support from the teaching assistant, who had studied abroad, enabled them to achieve a certain degree of success. Next year, we aim to adjust the group division and use interactive electronic blackboards to attain increased effectivity in international shared learning.

授業目的
SNS等を活用した双方向型授業を実施した。まず、日米両国の学校教育システムや地理教育カリキュラムをお互いに紹介し合い、それぞれの特徴・長所や改善すべき点について議論した。また、公民権運動と絡めつつ、アメリカの社会・文化・歴史およびアラバマ州の地理的特徴に対する理解を深めた。

10月29日：アメリカの学校教育システム全般についての講義、アラバマ大からの自己紹介動画に対する返信動画の作成・アップロード
11月5日：アメリカの社会科教育システム（特に地理教育）についての講義①、相手国の社会・文化紹介の動画作成・アップロード、日米両国の社会科教育カリキュラムについての論文配布
11月12日：アメリカの社会科教育システム（特に地理教育）についての講義②、日本の社会科教育カリキュラム紹介およびアメリカに対する質問についての動画①作成・アップロード
11月19日：日本の地理教育についての論文購読（Ikeno論文）、日本の社会科教育カリキュラム紹介およびアメリカに対する質問についての動画②作成・アップロード
11月26日：日本の地理教育についての論文購読（Saye論文）
12月12日：地理教育カリキュラムについての日米比較についてレポート作成および動画の作成・アップロード

両大学の学生をグループに分けたうえでペアを組ませ、動画のやり取りを重ねていった。アメリカ人学生の英語を聞き取るのが大変だったこと、動画作成の準備をするのに毎回相当の時間を要したこと、週1回のやり取りではスピード感に欠けること等、反省点は多々ある。しかし、留学経験のある学生がTAを務め、翻訳に大活躍してくれる等したため、一定の成果を収めることが出来たものと自己評価している。次年度は、グループの分け方を工夫したり、インタラクティブ型の電子黒板を活用したりして、より効果的な国際共同学修のあり方を模索したいと考えている。
