Class objectives
Addressing translations of Japanese manga texts primarily in German, this class looks at the essence of the act of translation, its problems, and how it is managed in reality.
Based on the knowledge acquired in the class, the students become aware of the act of translation in daily life.
Through international collaborative study with overseas partner schools, the students learn about the modern international popularity of manga.
Class content
Regarding the problems of translating Japanese manga (elements unfamiliar to readers of the translation, notes, translations hindering the understanding of the reader, onomatopoeia in manga), comments were received from Japanese language students at the University of Alabama based on their perspective as readers of the translated versions who are also able to read and understand the Japanese originals, opinions were exchanged with Chiba University students, and translation techniques were investigated and evaluated. English-language videos on the topic were uploaded to Knovio and shown to the University of Alabama students, who sent their comments via email. The comments, videos, and Japanese language class materials were shown to the Chiba University students on Moodle, and comments for the University of Alabama students were gathered using Moodle functions and sent via email.
Classes at Chiba University were held using COIL twice for the third and fourth session in Term 4 (October 20 and 27, 2021). Accordingly, comments from the University of Alabama were received on October 17 and 24.

As there were some the University of Alabama students with experience of manga translation among those exchanging comments, they shared their own experiences of translation, leading to a sound exchange of opinions. Through the exchange of comments, the students used to reading Japanese manga were able to reconsider the approach to reading manga based on the opinions of readers of translated versions. Comments from the University of Alabama students participating in COIL and from the Chiba University students were of great interest, and the students were interested when attending class.
There were as many as 90 participants from Chiba University per session, making the collection and selection of comments as much as that could be done; some students felt that it would have been better to have more bidirectional Q&A sessions with the students of the University of Alabama.

授業目的
主にドイツ語に翻訳された日本マンガの翻訳テクストを対象として、翻訳という行為とはどんなものなのか、何が問題になるか、実際にどのように対処されているかを見ていく。
また、授業を通して得た知識をもとに、日常的な翻訳行為について意識できるようになる。
また、海外協定校との国際協働学習を通じて、現在的で生の国際マンガ受容に触れる。
授業内容
日本マンガの翻訳版における翻訳上の問題（翻訳版読者にとってなじみのない要素、注、読者の理解を阻害する翻訳、マンガの中のオノマトペ）について、翻訳版受容者かつ日本語オリジナル版を読む・理解できる能力もあるアラバマ大の日本語を学習している学生目線からコメントをもらい、それと千葉大生との間で意見交換を行い、翻訳の手法とその評価について考察する。 Knovioにアップロードしたテーマに関する英語の動画資料をアラバマ大生に示し、それに対するコメントをメールでまとめて送付してもらい、コメント・動画資料・日本語の授業資料を千葉大生にMoodleで示し、Moodleの機能でアラバマ大生へのコメントを収集し、メールで送付した。
千葉大学の授業で、ターム4第3回、4回の2回分をCOILにあてた（2021年10月20，27日）。それに合わせて10月17，24日にアラバマ大学からコメントを受け取った。

コメントを通して交流できたアラバマ大の学生の中にマンガの翻訳経験があるメンバーがいたため、自身の翻訳経験を共有するなど実のある意見交換となった。コメントのやり取りを通し、日本のマンガを読み慣れている学生たちが翻訳版読者の意見を通して、新しくマンガの読み方を考え直す機会になったと考えられる。COILに参加してくれたアラバマ大学の学生にも千葉大学の学生のコメントが興味深くとらえられたとのことで、興味を持って受講してもらえたようだ。
千葉大側の参加者が1回につき90名程度の規模であったため、コメントを集めてピックアップするのが精一杯になってしまったが、学生からはアラバマ大の学生とのもっと双方向の質疑応答ができれば面白そうだったという意見があった。
