Class objectives
Focusing on modern Japanese pop culture, questions are asked regarding cultural history and background, representation research, and cultural consumption based on how content is made and consumed.
Class content
The topic was translations of Japanese manga with content greatly modified from the original text.
Focusing on examples of localization in translation, including Japanese cultural details, and examples wherein the original text was modified in the translation, resulting in context discrepancies, the students of the University of Alabama investigated the appropriateness of huge changes to the translated content and translation techniques for unfamiliar elements; based on their comments, the students of Chiba University considered the selection and evaluation of translation methods and the sensibilities of readers of translated editions.
English-language videos on this topic were uploaded to Knovio and shown to the University of Alabama students, who shared their comments via email. The comments, videos, and Japanese language class materials were shown to the Chiba University students on Moodle, and comments for the University of Alabama students were gathered using Moodle functions and shared via email.

Many students participating in COIL from the University of Alabama already had a great interest in Japanese manga, anime, and other pop culture, so lively and active comments were gathered. This stimulated the Chiba University students reading their comments and gave them a specific idea of the reception of translated content in other countries.

授業目的
現代日本のポピュラーカルチャーを対象に、コンテンツがどのように作られ消費されているかということから、その文化の歴史や消費の背景、表象研究、消費にまつわる問題をとらえる。
授業内容
テーマは日本のマンガ翻訳の中の、オリジナルテクストから大きく内容変更のあった翻訳についてを取り上げた。
日本の文化的な内容などを含み、翻訳版読者にとってなじみのないと考えられる要素を一般的なものに置き換えて翻訳する事例や、翻訳内容をオリジナルテクストから変更した結果文脈に沿わない状態になった事例を対象に、アラバマ大生には翻訳内容の大幅な変更の是非やなじみのないものの翻訳方法などを考察してもらい、そのコメントをもとに千葉大生には翻訳の方法の選び方やその評価、翻訳版を読む読者の感じ方などを考えてもらう。
Knovioにアップロードしたテーマに関する英語の動画資料をアラバマ大生に示し、それに対するコメントをメールで集め、コメント・動画資料・日本語の授業資料を千葉大制にMoodleで示し、Moodleの機能でアラバマ大生へのコメントを収集し、メールで送付した。

アラバマ大学側でCOILに参加した学生が日本のマンガやアニメのポップカルチャーにもともと興味を持っている場合が多く、活発で積極的なコメントが集まった。またそれにより、アラバマ大生からのコメントを読む千葉大側の学生に刺激を受け、海外における翻訳されたコンテンツの受容について具体的なイメージを持つことができたと考えられる。
