Class objectives
Most students have had little opportunity to learn about religion; even for those with some knowledge of the subject, explaining it in English is challenging. In this class, the aims are to acquire basic knowledge of religion in Japanese and English, understand an overview of religion in Japan, and be able to explain it in English. Session 5 on Thursdays ("A") conducts a general overview of knowledge about religion in Japan. In Session 5 on Tuesdays ("B"), Buddhism worldwide is studied in English.

Lectures in English can be presented on demand while still in Japan. In A, lectures that mix English and Japanese are available for students to acquire basic knowledge of religion while improving their English vocabulary. In B, along with lectures at a level similar to that of U.S. universities, the chat function is used for asynchronous online discussions with Stony Brook students and faculty. Throughout the entire class, the Chiba University faculty members provide Japanese support to eliminate any student unease.

授業目的
宗教に関する教養を学ぶ機会は少なく、また多少の知識を持つ学生であっても、それを英語で説明するのは難しい。この授業では、日本語と英語で宗教の基礎的知識を学び、日本の宗教状況について概要を理解するとともに、それを英語で説明できるようになることを目指す。木曜5限（Aと呼ぶ）は、日本の宗教に関する教養レベルの知識を概説的に学ぶ。火曜5限（Bと呼ぶ）は、世界の仏教について英語で学ぶ。

日本にいながらにして、英語による講義をオンデマンド型で体験できる。Aでは、英語・日本語のミックスの講義が視聴できるので、英語の語彙力とともに宗教の基礎知識が修得できる。Bでは、アメリカの大学で提供されるのとほぼ同レベルの講義を受講できる上、チャット機能を使うことで、ストーニーブルック校の学生や教員と、非同期オンライン・ディスカッションができる。授業全体を通して、千葉大学側の教員が日本語サポートをするので、安心して受講できる。
