Class objectives
Addressing translations of Japanese manga texts primarily in German, this class looks at the essence of the act of translation, its problems, and how it is managed in reality.
Based on the knowledge acquired in the class, the students become aware of the act of translation in daily life.
Through international collaborative study with overseas partner schools, the students learn about the modern international popularity of manga.
Class content
Students of Japanese at the University of Alabama provided comments on translation problems in translated versions of Japanese manga (cultural foods and institutions that are unique to Japan, consistency between translation and illustration), from their perspective as both consumers of the translated versions and people capable of reading and understanding the original Japanese versions. This was followed by a discussion with Chiba University students to consider translation methods and their evaluation.

Video materials in English on the relevant theme were uploaded to YouTube then shown to students at the University of Alabama, and comments on these materials were collected via email. The comments, along with video materials and Japanese class materials, were shown to Chiba University students via Moodle, and their comments were collected and sent to students at the University of Alabama via email using Moodle functions.
Many students found it significant that the exchange through COIL allowed them to learn how non-native readers who actually consume Japanese manga really feel. Some commented that the class gave them a chance to gain an objective perspective on manga representation, language, and culture, which they themselves take for granted. Some also called for opportunities for synchronous discussion through COIL, as well as active interaction with international students enrolled at Chiba University.

授業目的
主にドイツ語に翻訳された日本マンガの翻訳テクストを対象として、翻訳という行為とはどんなものなのか、何が問題になるか、実際にどのように対処されているかを見ていく。
また、授業を通して得た知識をもとに、日常的な翻訳行為について意識できるようになる。
また、海外協定校との国際協働学習を通じて、現在的で生の国際マンガ受容に触れる。
授業内容
日本マンガの翻訳版における翻訳上の問題（日本に独特な文化的な食べ物、施設の翻訳とイラストとの整合性）について、翻訳版受容者かつ日本語オリジナル版を読む・理解できる能力もあるアラバマ大の日本語を学習している学生目線からコメントをもらい、それと千葉大生との間で意見交換を行い、翻訳の手法とその評価について考察する。

Youtubeにアップロードしたテーマに関する英語の動画資料をアラバマ大生に示し、それに対するコメントをメールで集め、コメント・動画資料・日本語の授業資料を千葉大制にMoodleで示し、Moodleの機能でアラバマ大生へのコメントを収集し、メールで送付した。
COILでの交流を通し、実際に日本のマンガを受容している非ネイティブの読者たちが実際にどのようなことを感じているかを知ることができたことに意義を感じている学生が多かった。さらに自身が当然に感じているマンガ表現や言語・文化について、客観的な視点を持つことのきっかけを得たとのコメントもあった。またCOILを通し、同期的な意見交換の機会や、また千葉大学内に在籍する留学生との積極な交流を求める声も上がった。
