Class objectives
Focusing on modern Japanese pop culture, questions are asked regarding cultural history and background, representation research, and cultural consumption based on how content is made and consumed.
Class content
The theme of translating wordplay (puns) in Japanese manga translation was discussed as a specific example.
The class presented real examples of text containing elements that are difficult to translate, in terms of translating both meaning and similar sounds, and considered how they were translated from Japanese into English and German, and how to evaluate these examples.

Video materials in English on the relevant theme were uploaded to YouTube then shown to students at the University of Alabama, and comments on these materials were collected via email. The comments, along with video materials and Japanese class materials, were shown to Chiba University students via Moodle, and their comments were collected and sent to students at the University of Alabama via email using Moodle functions.
Along with the textual understanding by students at the University of Alabama, who are used to consuming translated versions of texts and understand Japanese language and culture, Chiba University students examined what makes a "good translation" in light of translation problems regarding choice of vocabulary, content, and context preservation in translation. Participants also learned about the current level of understanding of Japanese popular culture among students at the University of Alabama, which is Chiba University's exchange partner, and reflected on approaches to exchange based on this understanding.

授業目的
現代日本のポピュラーカルチャーを対象に、コンテンツがどのように作られ消費されているかということから、その文化の歴史や消費の背景、表象研究、消費にまつわる問題をとらえる。
授業内容
テーマは日本マンガ翻訳における、類音の言葉遊び（ダジャレ）の翻訳を具体例として扱った。
意味の翻訳と類音の翻訳という翻訳困難な要素を含んだテクストが、日本語から英語・ドイツ語に翻訳される際に実際の翻訳例ではどのような翻訳になっているのか、またその実例をどう評価するかを考える。

Youtubeにアップロードしたテーマに関する英語の動画資料をアラバマ大生に示し、それに対するコメントをメールで集め、コメント・動画資料・日本語の授業資料を千葉大制にMoodleで示し、Moodleの機能でアラバマ大生へのコメントを収集し、メールで送付した。
千葉大学の学生は、翻訳版を普段から受容し、また日本語や日本文化を理解するアラバマ大学の学生のテクスト理解を通し、翻訳における内容や翻訳語彙の選択、文脈の保持などの観点から翻訳上の問題を踏まえ「よい翻訳」を考察していた。また、交流先のアラバマ大学の学生の日本のポピュラーカルチャーの理解度の現在を知り、それを踏まえた交流の在り方を考えることになった。
