Class objectives

Students formed small groups (2 students from the University of Alabama + 4 to 5 students from Chiba University) and had lively discussions on social media. They highlighted the characteristics of social studies education in Japan and the U.S., as well as its cultural and historical background. They also learned how the perception of global issues differs between Japan and the U.S., and considered how social studies education has been affected by this difference. The class provided an opportunity to deepen mutual understanding between Japanese and American students and to consider the role that global education should play.

Class content

COIL classes were held from October to early December in "Introduction to Geography", a specialized course offered by the School of Education in T4-5. All were asynchronous online classes. More specifically, the format involved creating and posting self-introduction videos, videos introducing and comparing the cultures of the two countries, and videos introducing the characteristics of social studies education in the partner country, followed by a series of mutual questions and answers. To further enhance understanding, a lecture on the U.S. educational system and regional characteristics of the Southern U.S. was also given in conjunction with the online classes. In addition, after the completion of COIL classes (in late December and January), lectures and discussions were held on the American civil rights movement and the role of Alabama, as well as the evolution of various issues in the 21st century.

The program was made possible by experience gained in previous academic years. Through an in-depth study of U.S. geography after the completion of COIL, students were able to observe the realities of the many divisions and integrations in U.S. society, and their political, economic, and cultural backgrounds, from various perspectives.
