Class objectives

Students have few opportunities to be educated about religion, and even those with some knowledge find it difficult to explain it in English. The objective of this class is for students to acquire basic knowledge of religion in both Japanese and English, gain an overview of the status of religion in Japan, and learn to explain it in English.

Class content

Part I consists of on-demand classes held twice a week. On Mondays, 5th period, students will learn about Buddhism around the world in English, using online materials from U.S. universities that have been adapted for Chiba University. On Thursdays, 5th period, students will gain a general overview of Japanese religion at an educational level, mostly in English.
Part II is a synchronous interactive class held once a week. Faculty in charge of the series of lectures in Part I will present one after the other in Part II. Students will prepare questions and issues from Part I and ask questions directly to faculty in English. In addition, students from Japan and the U.S. will continue discussions among themselves in English. Part II may only be taken by students who have taken Part I (including those who have taken the same class in the past).

Chiba University students get to experience lectures in English while in Japan. In Part I, on Mondays, students can attend lectures at about the same level as those offered at U.S. universities; on Thursdays, they can watch lectures in a mix of English and Japanese, thus acquiring basic knowledge of religion along with English vocabulary. The chat feature allows for asynchronous online discussions with students and faculty at Stony Brook University. In Part II, students can prepare questions and issues that arose in Part I, and ask questions directly to faculty members in English (some of the questions may be in Japanese as well). Japanese and American students can also have further discussions in English. Chiba University faculty members provide Japanese language support throughout the entire class, so that students can take the course with peace of mind.

授業目的

宗教に関する教養を学ぶ機会は少なく、また多少の知識を持つ学生であっても、それを英語で説明するのは難しい。この授業では、日本語と英語で宗教の基礎的知識を学び、日本の宗教状況について概要を理解するとともに、それを英語で説明できるようになることを目指す。

授業内容

Iは、週2回のオンデマンド型授業である。月曜5限は、アメリカの大学のオンライン教材を千葉大学向けにアレンジした教材を使い、世界の仏教について英語で学ぶ。木曜5限は、日本の宗教に関する教養レベルの知識を、主に英語で概説的に学ぶ。
IIは、週1回の同時双方向型授業である。Iのオムニバス担当教員が、IIに順番で登壇する。受講生は、Iの疑問や論点を整理して持ち寄り、教員に直接英語で質問する。また、日米の学生同士が英語で議論を深める。IIはI（過去の同一授業を含む）の受講生のみ履修可とする。

千葉大学生は、日本にいながらにして、英語による講義を体験できる。Iの月曜では、アメリカの大学で提供されるのとほぼ同レベルの講義を受講できる。Iの木曜では、英語・日本語のミックスの講義が視聴できるので、英語の語彙力とともに宗教の基礎知識が修得できる。チャット機能を使うことで、ストーニーブルック校の学生や教員と、非同期オンライン・ディスカッションができる。IIでは、Iの中で生じた疑問や論点を整理して持ち寄り、教員に直接英語（一部は日本語も可）で質問できる。また、日米の学生同士が、英語で議論を深めることができる。授業全体を通して、千葉大学側の教員が日本語サポートをするので、安心して受講できる。
